THOMAS A. JOAS

THOMAS A. JOAS, M.D. HONORED FOR HIS CONTRIBUTION TO AN HISTORIC EVENT IN THE ASA

Organized Anesthesia and the Government

At the 2006 ASA Legislative Conference, Thomas A. Joas, M.D. received the Alabama Cup, in appreciation of his contribution to the founding of the ASA Political Action Committee (ASA PAC).  Dr. Joas introduced a resolution at the 1990 ASA House of Delegates to create the ASA Good Government Fund. This fund supports legislators and government officials who understand and express sympathetic views on the close personal relationship between anesthesiologists and their patients which is essential for excellent anesthetic patient care.  The Alabama Cup is a trophy established by the Alabama Society of Anesthesiologists to promote political awareness on such professional issues important to the anesthesiology community.  Thomas A. Joas, M.D., the recipient, is recognized for his contribution in the area of legislative affairs.  Additionally Dr. Joas is a friend to the Wood Library-Museum of Anesthesiology.  He served as a committee chair and advisor to the WLM on governmental issues and on how the WLM could meet the needs of the ASA members and the expectations of the ASA House of Delegates.
