This volume of Careers includes essays from four people involved with the establishment of research as an important part of clinical anesthesiology. All began their careers working βat the bench,β studying problems that had important implications for basic sciences and clinical anesthesiology. One continued on this path; others fostered research as department chairs, university administrators or journal editors. Each describes factors pivotal in the development of his work in research. Taken together, the essays provide unique insight into the role played by research in the transition of the practice of anesthesiology from a technical service for surgeons and patients into a discipline that could rightfully be called a profession.
