James Tayloe Gwathmey, MD: American Pioneer Anesthesiologist, 1989.
This publication includes a biographical sketch, bibliography and reprints of Dr. Gwathmey’s journal publications. Dr. Gwathmey was one of the earliest private-practice anesthesiologists. From his extensive private practice and experimentation, he went on to explore the new specialty of anesthesiology, publishing the first comprehensive American textbook of anesthesiology in 1914 and becoming a key founding member and the first president of the New York Society of Anesthetists, a precursor of the American Society of Anesthesiologists.
