E.S. SIKER, M.D.

E.S. Siker, M.D., Pittsburgh, was installed as President of the American Society of
Anesthesiologists at the final meeting of the 1972 House of Delegates on Wednesday, October 4,
during the ASA Annual Meeting in Boston, Massachusetts.

Dr. Siker is Chairman of the Department of Anesthesiology, Mercy Hospital, Pittsburgh, and
Clinical Professor of Anesthesia, University of Pittsburgh.

He has served the Society as a member of the Board of Directors, as Chairman of the Committee
on Administrative Affairs, and as a member of the Research and Internships committees.

A Fellow of the American College of Anesthesiologists, he was, while a member of its Board of
Governors, Chairman of the Committee on Bylaws and a member of the Oral Examinations and
Self-Evaluation Exam committees.

Dr. Siker is a Diplomate of the American Board of Anesthesiology and in 1971 was elected to its
Board of Directors.

Dr. Siker is a past president of the Pennsylvania Society of Anesthesiologists.

Born in Port Chester, New York, he completed his undergraduate studies at Duke University,
Durham, North Carolina, and received his M.D. degree in 1949 from the College of Medicine,
New York University, graduating as class president.

After his internship at Grasslands Hospital in Valhalla, New York, his residency there in
anesthesiology was interrupted by two years of active duty with the United States Navy. During
the first year, Dr. Siker was anesthesiologist to the 4th Field Hospital in Korea, while on loan to
the Army and served the second year at the Bremerton Naval Hospital. He completed his
residency at Mercy Hospital in Pittsburgh.

In 1954 Dr. Siker spent one year as a Post-doctoral Research Fellow, U.S. Public Health
Services, in the Department of Research Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh. He then
participated in one of the first teaching exchanges in anesthesiology between the United States
and Great Britain, serving for one year as senior consultant in anesthetics at the Welsh National
School of Medicine in Cardiff.

Dr. Siker has served as a member of the Pennsylvania Governor’s Commission on Professional
Liability Insurance. He has authored more than 50 publications, including numerous chapters in
anesthesia literature and has co-authored a textbook on narcotics.
