Abstract: Dr. Lente discusses safety in the use of ether, chloroform,
ether-chloroform mixture and other anesthetics, and advocates for the
adherence to routine precautionary procedures. He cites other expert
anesthetists of the time, such as John Snow and Dr. Squibb, and
attributes causes of a majority of alleged anesthetic deaths to be
disease and/or injury related. He describes chloroform as more potent
and lethal than ether, and discourages the use of a mixed anesthetic in
chloroform and ether. He recommends resuscitation through artificial
respiration in case of anesthetic related asphyxia.
