Abstract: Having reviewed all the fatal cases of chloroform anesthesia, Warren
concludes that death was not simply attributed to asphyxia. He suspects
that chloroform possesses “an undiscoverable toxic action” which first
affects the lungs, and is then carried to the nervous system with fatal
consequence. He argues that chloroform inhalation is habit forming, and
so dangerous to the physician as well as the patient. He cites several
cases of non-medical fatal inhalations, including the destruction of an
anonymous New York physician (alluding to Horace Wells). Due to the
potential hazards of chloroform, he proposes that it should not be used
in minor surgical cases, and encourages substitution with chloric ether
and sulfuric ether.
