Abstract: This work is Mesmer’s dissertation for his medical degree at the
University of Vienna. Mesmer draws on Mead’s astrological ideas and
discusses the gravitational forces of the sun and the moon which affect
the ebb and flow of oceanic tides. He asserts that such forces
directly influence the human body. He termed such effect on the human
body “animal gravitation” which later became known as animal magnetism.
