Discover the history of anesthesia through Patrick Sim's masterfully-crafted annotated bibliography.
Patrick Sim, MLS, the Paul M. Wood Distinguished Librarian Emeritus of the Wood Library-Museum of Anesthesiology (WLM), served the WLM and the ASA with extraordinary expertise, grace, and devotion for 39 years. During the last 3 decades of his tenure, Patrick had been compiling an annotated bibliography of the Rare Book Collection of the WLM that chronicled the history of anesthesiology through the prism of the WLM’s priceless holdings. Unfortunately, when Patrick died on the eve of the 2010 ASA Annual Meeting, the bibliography, titled The Heritage of Anesthesia, was unfinished. His friends and colleagues, Donald Caton, MD, Kathryn E. McGoldrick, MD, archivist Felicia Reilly, MALS, and medical editor Pauline Snider---with the executive assistance of Karen Bieterman, MLIS, librarian-manager of the WLM---worked together to complete Patrick Sim’s scholarly tome. The Heritage of Anesthesia is now available for purchase. This special edition is limited to 200 copies and they will be numbered in sequence. It is a beautiful volume that will be a uniquely valuable addition to the bookshelves of anesthesiologists, surgeons, medical historians, and medical librarians throughout the world.
