Patrick Giam, MD, FASA

Patrick Giam, M.D., FASA, is president of the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA). He is physician partner of U.S. Anesthesia Partners in Houston, Texas, a clinical assistant professor of Weill Cornell Medical College, an assistant professor of clinical anesthesiology at the Houston Methodist Academic Institute and an adjunct clinical assistant professor of the Texas A&M School of Medicine.

Dr. Giam is a long-time member of ASA and advocate for the specialty. Dr. Giam has served ASA in numerous leadership roles, most recently as president-elect, first vice president and chief of the Division of Administrative Affairs. He has also been speaker of the House of Delegates and chair of the Committee on Large Group Practice. Dr. Giam has served as a member of the Committee on Bylaws, Special Board Committee on Expert Witness Testimony, Committee on Neuroanesthesiology, Committee on Practice Management, Committee on Budget, Committee on Credentials and Committee on Governance Effectiveness and Efficiencies. He has also served on several ad hoc committees, including the following: Accountable Care Organizations, Governing Documents Alignment, NACOR Assessment and Business Development, Quality Practice Recognition, Payment Reform, Board Certification and Maintenance, and Annual Meeting Assessment. Dr. Giam is a former director of the Anesthesia Quality Institute and a former member of the Executive Board of the ASA Political Action Committee.

He is a long-serving member of the Texas Society of Anesthesiologists and was president in 2009. He is a member of the Texas Medical Association, the American Institute of Parliamentarians and is a registered parliamentarian of the National Association of Parliamentarians.

Dr. Giam received his Bachelor of Science degree in zoology from Texas A&M University in College Station and his medical degree from Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas. He completed his internship in internal medicine and his residency in anesthesiology at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, and his fellowship in cardiovascular anesthesiology at the Texas Heart Institute in Houston, Texas. His clinical practice has been focused on neuroanesthesia, and liver transplantation. He is board-certified in anesthesiology.
