The History of Anesthesiology Reprint Series: Part 1 – An Account of the First Use of Sulphuric Ether.

Part One, second printing in 1992, consists of two papers by Southerners, Crawford W. Long and J. Marion Sims, describing the claim of Long and Georgia to the great discovery, now exactly one hundred and fifty years old.
The fact that William T.G. Morton, a Northerner, took up the same search and made the famous first public demonstration of ether's powers rendered anesthesia a purely American discovery, a boon to humanity which, as Marion Sims wisely pointed out, should be--and has long since become--a proud and significant unifying element in the medical history of the United States.

A copy was presented to each registrant of The Third International Symposium on the History of Anesthesia TISHA in 1992.

Part One was originally published in 1971.
