The International Anesthesia Research Society (IARS) was founded in 1922 to advance and support scientific research and education related to anesthesia, and to improve patient care through basic research. In the same year IARS began publication of the monthly journal, Anesthesia and Analgesia. Many of this medical specialty's most influential leaders have served as officers of their professional associations. But few served so many organizations, and in so many capacities, as did Dr. Paul Meyer Wood (1894-1963.) His career of service began while he was still a medical student, when he raised a volunteer ambulance corps for the U. S. Army, and continued for the rest of his life. He was an active participant and a leader in local, state, and national societies. In 1938, the IARS presented him with this loving cup. It is engraved, in part: "In appreciative recognition of splendid achievements in the organization, research, practice, journalism and teaching of anesthesia."
