Abstract: One of the earliest accounts on somnambulism in the United States. Belden defines somnambulism as the connecting link between sleep and insanity, regarding it a state of imperfect sleep. The mind might be conscious of external events, yet it is influence by visions of the past. The somnambulistic episodes of Jane C. Rider serve as a case study for this phenomenon.
