Abstract: Churchill discusses the successful use of ether in surgical operations
and the reports of other physicians in using ether to ease pain during
labor. He summarizes arguments against the use of ether for labor pain.
He concludes that he will use ether for obstetric operations but will
not urge its use in ordinary cases. He goes on to discuss ether’s
administration, recommending an apparatus developed by Simpson (p.
304-306).
