He presents a historical account of the discovery of chloroform and its
anesthetic properties. Cochran calls attention to Jacob Bell’s
description of particular anesthetic properties of chloroform published
in the Pharmaceutical Journal in February of 1847 – 9 months before
James Young Simpson’s discovery in November, 1847.
