Abstract: Gillette reports the results of studies into the effects of morphine on the newborn infant when given to the mother during the second stage of labor. Gillette discusses his own case studies as well as the research results of studies conducted by others. He concludes that, when given in doses that control the mother’s pain, morphine is life threatening to the newborn infant.
