Abstract: In this reprint, Sims argues that Crawford Long was the first to apply ether anesthesia in a surgical procedure. Sims also acknowledges Sir Humphry Davy’s role in the discovery of surgical anesthesia and speculates that had Davy been a surgeon, he would have made the discovery himself.
