Abstract: Young wrote this paper based on original documents provided by Long’s
daughter, Frances Long Taylor, and presented it the Johns Hopkins
Historical Society in 1896. Young draws on historical events as they
are articulated in the original documents from Frances Long in an
effort to support Crawford Long’s claim to the discovery of anesthesia.
In addition, Young contacted Dr. J.F. Groves, a former student of Long,
to provide living testimony of Long’s discovery of ethereization in
early 1845.
