Since its founding in 1905, as the Long Island Society of Anesthetists,  the achievements of the ASA have made it an important voice in American Medicine and the foremost advocate for all patients who require anesthesia or relief from pain. Anesthesiology is a profession rich in history, and it is a history that has contributed greatly to the advancement of medical science. Without the amazing advances in anesthesia drugs and techniques over the past century, much of the miracle of modern medicine and surgery would be impossible. The specialty has been recognized as a leader in improving patient safety. The ASA’s dedication to the patient dates back to their very beginnings. A look at the highlights of ASA’s history shows how strongly the safety of patients has motivated the research, education, training and dedication of the specialty of anesthesiology, all of which have produced the safe and effective state of anesthesia today.

Today, the ASA has more than 46,000 members to thank for their strength. Just as important, they had those remarkable men and women who went before them. They discovered new science, they treated patients with compassion and caring, and they taught the next generations of anesthesiologists.
