Charles Henry Sanford was born July 9, 1881. He graduated from Stanford University in 1906, and received his M. D. from the Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons in 1910. He served in the U. S. Navy medical corps and attained the rank of Major. He spent his career at the Lennox Hill Hospital, in New York City, where he did his internship, and later became Chief of Anesthesia. He was a member of the New York Society of Anesthetists (serving as President in 1922), the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA), and the International Anesthesia Research Society. Dr. Sanford is credited with inventing the Sanford Universal Anesthesia Inhaler, nasal and mouth hooks, and a two-way valve.
