CARL E. WASMUTH, M.D.
The American Society of Anesthesiologists has embarked on a new and eventful year under the
guidance of Carl E. Wasmuth, M.D., Head of the Department of Anesthesiology at Cleveland
Dr. Wasmuth was installed as the 1969 President Oct. 23 at the final session of the House of
Delegates at the Washington Hilton, Washington, D.C., during the ASA Annual Meeting.
Dr. Wasmuth has successfully combined distinguished careers in two demanding professions,
medicine and law. He served the American Society of Anesthesiologists from 1960-67 as
Speaker of the House of Delegates and was elected President Elect last year.
Born in Swissvale, Pennsylvania, Dr. Wasmuth received his B.S. degree from the University of
Pittsburgh in 1935 and his M.D. degree from the same University in 1939. He interned at
Western Pennsylvania Hospital in Pittsburgh from 1939-40.
In 1949 he received a Fellowship in Anesthesiology from the Cleveland Clinic Foundation, and,
two years later, was named staff anesthesiologist at the Cleveland Clinic Hospital. Last year he
was appointed Head of the Department of Anesthesiology.
Dr. Wasmuth is a Diplomate of the American Board of Anesthesiology, a Fellow of the
American College of Anesthesiologists, and a Fellow of the American College of Legal
Medicine. He also holds membership in the Cleveland Academy of Medicine, which he has
served since 1964 as a member of the Medical-Legal Committee.
Dr. Wasmuth received his L.L.B. degree from Cleveland-Marshall Law School in 1959 and has
subsequently taken an active part in the school’s administration. At present he is a member of the
Cleveland-Marshall Law School Board of Trustees and Chairman of the Executive Committee.
A member of the American Bar Association, Dr. Wasmuth serves on the ABA Committee on
Individual Rights and Responsibilities and is a member of the Cleveland Bar Association.
For three successive years, from 1966-68, Dr. Wasmuth served as president of the American
College of Legal Medicine and has been re-elected to serve as president in 1969. He is a
member of Phi Rho Sigma medical fraternity and Delta Theta Phi legal fraternity.
Dr. Wasmuth is the author of three books, Anesthesia and the Law, Law for the Physician, and
Law and the Surgical Team. He was contributing editor for Medicine, Surgery and Specialties
and Lawyers’ Medical Cyclopedia, and editor of International Anesthesiology Clinics.
