Abstract: In the Spring of 1784, the King of France appointed a commission to
investigate the claims of animal magnetism. Investigations commenced
in March 1784 and this report was released in August of that same year.
In this report, the commission concluded that there was no evidence
for the existence of an animal magnetic fluid. Written by Bailly in his
capacity as secretary of the research committee.

General Notes: Crabtree attributes this report to J.-S. Bailly. Bailly was the
secretary of the commission and editor of the report. Benjamin
Franklin was chairman of the commission.

General Notes: Copies two and three contain a handwritten document which was a secret
report submitted to the King, not an official part of the document,
expressing the concern of the commissioners regarding morality in the
practice of animal magnetism. This document was signed by Franklin,
Bory, Lavoisier, Bailly, Majault, Sallin, D’Arcet, Guillotin and le Roi.
