Abstract: Black discusses his views, and contrasts them is Snow’s conclusions, on
the causes of death during chloroform use. He argues that most deaths
are from asphyxia caused by high concentrations of chloroform used for
induction. Black advises that patients should be kept breathing easily
throughout chloroform administration.
