Abstract: Contains the histories of two operations performed by Loysel on
mesmerized patients: Marie d’Albanel, who underwent the amputation of
her leg, and M. Baysset, Jr., whose enlarged submaxillary glands were
surgically removed. The mesmerism was successful in minimizing the
patients experience of pain during the surgeries.

General Notes: Loysel performed 12 major operations on mesmerized patients between
October 2 1845 and June 4, 1846, just before the advent of chemical
anesthesia.
