Abstract: This work begins with an historical account on the discovery of anesthesia and the subsequent controversy in America. It continues with a discussion of the chemistry of anesthetics, apparatus, artificial respiration, etc. It includes a letter from J. Marion Sims on the surgical applications of obstetrics.
