Abstract: After successfully derailing Morton’s effort to persuade the U.S. Congress that he was the discoverer of anesthesia, Truman Smith issued this letter to the women of Hartford, Connecticut in an effort to re-iterate the contributions of Horace Wells to the discovery of anesthesia and to dissuade them from supporting Morton’s claim.
