Abstract: The Amsterdam report translated here was the second English
translation. Alexander Johnson’s “A Short Account of a Society at
Amsterdam” instituted in the year 1767 for the Recovery of Drowned
Persons, 1773, was the first to be translated into English. However,
Cogan’s translation was direct and more detailed, while Johnson’s was a
paraphrase and summary.
